BANGALORE: Basab Pradhan, global sales and marketing head at Infosys, talks to TOI about the global environment , the challenges ahead and the company's strategies. Excerpts
Why is Infosys's performance so weak?
Times are choppier than ever before. Unlike in the last recession when there was decent growth in parts of Europe, especially Germany, and most emerging markets, this time no one is doing well.
What's going to happen in Europe is anybody's guess. The entire banking system is under severe stress. Growth has stalled in the US. Bad news for Obama but the country is not going anywhere. Emerging markets too are in a bad shape. So we just have to see through the downturn, and try to fight for higher marketshare during this period.
Do you see a light at the end of the tunnel?
Growth this time is going to be harder to come by. One silver lining in the cloud is the technology sector in the US. Apple by itself is a reason for that, and it has created this big eco-system.
Mobility is going good, Samsung has done phenomenally well. So also those like Google.
Doesn't Infosys need a brand campaign, given that you have been under attack from analysts and media for several quarters for your performance ? You say you have a transformation story to tell that has not been fully understood yet.
Our image in India and that outside are very different. Our global image is influenced by the work we do for our customers . Our image in India is influenced by the company's performance and perceptions about us as an employer.
We can't do big marketing campaigns like, say, IBM can. We don't have that kind of money. But more and more of our releases will focus on the unique and innovative things we do, even if those relate to contracts of small sizes. McKinsey never advertises, but they are way ahead of their competition. Our work should speak for itself.
Analysts say Infosys does not budge when it comes to pricing.
If we have to price it to win, we will do so. But pricing is not the only criteria. We are a value player.
